Audience Engagement Manager

The social media/admin assistant will provide support for all editorial social media platforms at Sojourners. Responsibilities include posting website content to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; creating original content for each platform when possible; and diving into the analytics behind the posts to understand what’s working and what’s not. The editorial social platforms at Sojourners hold to a high degree of journalism ethics consistent with our editorial policies and practices, and this position falls within those parameters.


  • Help manage editorial social media handles (currently Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)
  • Use analytics tools and engagement insights provided within the social platforms to track growth and success across social channels
  • Monitor (and when necessary, reply to) social media comments to boost engagement
  • Work with magazine and online editors to produce social copy and headlines for our content
  • Alert the editorial team when there are important conversations happening on Twitter or other platforms that could lead to interesting stories or allow for us to reshare a relevant story we’ve already published
  • Update and maintain editorial spreadsheet with evergreen content that can be shared on our distribution platforms beyond immediate news moments
  • Pitch and write/produce online search engine optimized (SEO) content for
  • Attend weekly meetings and planning retreats with the editorial staff
  • Coordinate with other teams at Sojourners to manage social media ads, events, and cross-platform collaboration
  • Recruitment and application processing in coordination with the fellowship director
  • Sort mail in the office 1-2 times weekly
  • Office maintenance tasks in coordination with the office manager
  • Administrative tasks in coordination with the chief human resources officer


  • Prior experience working with or managing a social media account, preferably for a newspaper, magazine, or other publication
  • Strong writing, editing, communication, and organization skills
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets and willingness to learn more in-depth data and analytics skills
  • General understanding of the comments section on websites and social media platforms (prior experience moderating comments for a website or social media platform a plus)
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize tasks in fast-paced news environment
  • Enthusiasm for organization, accuracy, and detail
  • Ability to practice appropriate self-care when dealing with ugly comments online
  • Creativity and initiative
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, content management systems, and email management systems a plus
