Editorial Associate

The editorial assistant provides a range of administrative, research, and editing support to the editorial staff. The responsibilities below are shared between two editorial assistants.


  • Thoroughly fact check each issue of Sojourners
  • Assist with copy editing and proofing Sojourners
  • Upload and proof the online version of Sojourners, selecting and editing artwork with Photoshop, and drafting online headlines
  • Pitch and write commentaries, online articles, and reviews
  • Write two “Contributing” bios for each issue of the magazine, including interviewing authors
  • Research entries and write blurbs for the New & Noteworthy section of Sojourners
  • Research quotes for the Spotlight section of Sojourners
  • Process author payments, complimentary copies, reprint requests, magazine exchanges, award submissions, and other administrative tasks
  • Manage incoming books and media for review
  • Participate in planning the magazine by attending weekly meetings with the editorial staff and semiannual editorial planning retreats
  • Maintain author diversity spreadsheet; report three times a year to editorial staff
  • Monitor pitch inbox and maintain pitch spreadsheet
  • Update Preaching the Word every month, uploading content to Sojourners’ website
  • Assist with miscellaneous research projects related to magazine authors, magazine topics, online strategy, etc.


  • Strong background in research and writing
  • Enthusiasm for organization, spreadsheets, accuracy, and detail
  • Team player, eager to take initiative and suggest new ideas
  • Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks
  • Creativity and a sense of humor
  • Experience conducting interviews
  • Familiarity with Drupal or similar content management systems a plus
  • Willingness to develop and practice appropriate self-care when dealing with difficult and sometimes disturbing topics in our coverage

Personal and Professional Development:

  • Network in the fields of journalism, media, and faith-based publishing
  • Master entry-level editorial skills, including fact-checking, proofreading, developing article ideas, headline-writing, and balancing deadlines
  • Learn the basics of digital content management systems (i.e. Drupal and HTML)
