This is my idea of Church! The body of Christ, meeting the needs of the culture we live in. Once again I am blown away by the "marriage" of gifts with ministry. God gifts us, equips us, gives us desires to desire and fulfills them in ways that meet our needs while doing His work.

What a wonderfully creative way to see those who drive an industry be blessed and acknowledged for their value.

I used to feel that the same should be done for janitors in large corporate offices, or office buildings.

God bless your life, your livelihood and your ministry.

We often want to know what we can do, and if what we do is just, justified, righteous, and helpful.

Armed with information, we can decide how and why we become involved.

I am grateful that the gifts of story telling and the commitment to justice are married and that the marriage may bring about justice to those whom God deeply cares about, children.

I think the point is, that sterotypes of any kind are sad irrelevant excuses to play smoke and mirror tricks on others.  To accuse President Obama of being a snob because he would like our young people the opportunity for college is absolutely sad.

Two of my children owe a great deal in college loans.  One could not complete her degree because her health would not let her work and go to school at the same time.  One of the other, not both.  Work study grants said both or nothing.  She was unable to work for 7 years due to her cost of medications and no health insurance, and her loans have grown.  She is bright and capable and would have been done with school had a viable program been in place for her.  And her loans would have been paid back by now.

The other, could not get reasonable child care.  She has not ended her college dreams.  But her loans also continue to grow.

The cost of college is obscene.  The average graduate owes more than our first house cost us.  To eliminate the opportunity for college for the average middle class parents, who cannot afford to help their kids to attend, is sad.  To assume that only the rich should go, or the poorest, or to assume that the any of us are snobs because we see education as a means to an end, is the issue here.

I speak from first hand experience as to the attitudes that Christians can have about higher learning.  To say that we must protect our children's faith by eliminating opportunity for our countries youth is in my opinion irresponsible.

The opportunity should be there.  President Obama is absolutely right.

Yipes,

How often have I thought about the gay marriage issue in much the same light. If you think celebrating diversity, truly means celebrating differences of opinions and lifestyles, while protecting civil liberties, than one would think, and maybe I'm missing something here, that government need not be in the marriage industry.

As painful as it can be that someone may disagree with us on any given issue, state mandated agreement does not encourage true diversity of thought. Instead it engineers socially accepted sameness of beliefs.

I would stand shoulder to shoulder fighting for civil liberties for those gays wishing to have a legally binding civil union. But... must I assume that in order to protect others' civil liberties, we need agree on everything about each others lifestyle.

Doesn't this argument also fall somewhere under the category of separation of church and state?

Marginalization can happen in any circle depending on who the minority is and what camp you frequent.

Civil liberties yes! True diversity welcomed. God in charge of the rest.

Well until my 40's I was a conservative Christian because I was very afraid not to be.  And that is the nature of religion vs. relationship.  How do you refute every sermon that tells you how to live and if you don't live that way, you can't possibly be a Christian.  That hollow, list of rules that left me constantly questioning myself AND everyone else, was an ineffective measuring stick to my own righteousness and a very effective way of dividing camps and judging others.

I heard that whole argument of "conservatives give more".  The Pharisee's were pretty proud of their giving record.  What good did they do?

Unfortunately, as a preacher's kid, Sunday School superintendent, bible study leader, praying mom, and Focus on the Family contributor, I reached a point where I could no longer stomach the hole in the gospel that I heard.

The poor in our community were outsiders and therefore, did not qualify for help, unless they converted and came to church.

For me leaving the church, to find my faith, meant leaving those "facts" behind that simply did not hold water.

The hypocrisy is visible even to adults and many today's unchurched are rich in faith but lacking faith in the institution of church.  Or at least the church of their childhoods.

My dad absolutely refused to let us go to a secular college. And I absolutely refused to go to a "Bible" college, where the kids could be as wild as march hares.

My husband was raised in a parochial school, where the same fears were promoted about not attending a Catholic school.

I left my "church" and discovered my faith when I began looking for truth and walked away from rhetoric, dogma, and fear based brainwashing.

Every child should have the opportunity to go to college if they should so wish. Our country needs to value education more unless we intend to be servants to those who excel and surpass our capabilities to create and perform jobs.

The college experience may need transforming to become more productive, but higher learning is the goal.

I hate to say it, but my dad was the snob. He detested anyone who came from higher learning and believes our scientists, doctors, etc. are in a big conspiracy theory to take God out of our lives. He uses the scripture verse from Timothy, about ever learning but never coming to the full understanding of the truth to justify his stance.

I still believe evangelicals were bamboozled by a marketing plan by the Republican party, where back room deals were made with the reigning moral majority platform of Falwell, Dobson and Francis Schaeffer.

The rhetoric just sounded so Christian, and none of us wanted to be found wanting when the Lord returned and asked who we had voted for.

I've wondered myself why the hypocrisy.

Not that King David would have won any elections. Or most of the heroes of the bible for that matter.

Can one imagine Moses running for office with murder on his resume?

And to read, President Obama's words about his conversion experience, where he knelt at the cross and asked that the blood of Christ cover his sins, because we are all in need of forgiveness and because the atonement is there for all to freely partake of...my paraphrase... may never be believed, because, even though it is enough of a personal testimony to join any white protestant evangelical churches, it won't fly about a man, who would apply the gospel message to the whole of his life.

I'm fundamental in my beliefs about the apostles' creed, the resurrected Savior, the atonement...
but there are those who will say if I vote democrat, I can't be a Christian.

Does it have to be a leading politician?

All you have to do is google is, "was slavery good for blacks?"

I certainly have heard this from the pulpit!

One of the first articles to pop up under a google!  And yes crazy people abound on either side!

Alabama State Senator: Slavery Good For BlacksOTHER NEWS TO NOTE - SOUTHMay 10, 1996

MONTGOMERY, ALA. — A white state senator running for Congress wrote a speech in which he argued that slavery is justified by the Bible and was good for blacks. ''People who are bitter and hateful about slavery are obviously bitter and hateful against God and his word,'' Charles Davidson wrote. Davidson, 61, a Republican from Jasper, prepared the speech for a Senate debate over his proposal to fly the Confederate battle flag over the Capitol. The measure was tabled before he had a chance to speak, but he passed out copies of the speech later.

It always looks better re-written in the history books or played out on black and white television. But even for middle class white folks, the unspoken world of subjects never discussed, as good proper folks didn't air their dirty laundry has repressed generations of traumatized youngsters.

Those who grew up watching their mom get slapped around were faithful to show up on Sunday morning at their local parish, willing to protect the family story. The young girl who went away to stay with relatives for half a year, came back sadder and some how more grown up. The alcoholic, the mistress laden marriages, the chronically depressed were all sheltered behind the image of proper families.

I'm sure the good old days existed for some. Both my parents, depression-era children talk of happy untroubled childhoods with tremendous freedoms to run, play, dream, unfettered by too much bad news! Perhaps a desire for nostalgia is a desire to return to a state of ignorance!

Priority number one! Before everything, the church must step up and use their wealth to do something! If not the church, God will raise up someone, somewhere and the church, in my opinion will come under judgement. How God must grieve over the abuse of children.

Sorry, my sis-in-law is truly one of the most moral, decent, loving, kind, outwardly responsible, non-gossiping, non-judgemental, clean-talking, spontaneous giving, wholesome person I know.  She's an agnostic.   I believe we are created in God's image and many know to do right and do it because of love for fellow man.  Unfortunately with Christ followers, the religious spirit often gains ground.  Like the pinch of leavening that Jesus talks about with the Pharisees, which leaveneth the whole lump, the fruit of the flesh is mean spirited behavior.  See Galations flip side of the fruit of the spirit. if we are trusting in our religion, we will manifest rotten fruit.

Which I believe is the message of this post.

I just respectfully disagree that only with Christ's help can we be kind.  There are many kind people who never met Christ or understood the power of the Gospel.  Unfortunately there are many Christians, who are not kind.

And I bet that pastor's message rang hollow with you.  I had a little deli where the church crowd often left tracts and no tip.  I wanted to chase them out the door and ask if they had ever met Jesus and invited him into their lives.  The bible is clear.  Out of the heart flows the issues of life.  A quarter tip says it all.  On the other hand, being a preacher's kid, a quarter probably meant alot to that minister.  We were poorer than church mice growing up.  Which is another sermon altogether.
