I sure hope so but I'm not yet convinced. The president's approval ratings were finally starting to approach 50% until he turned the subject to contraception.
I understand your point that this decision was all about politics and I agree that in this election year nothing is more important than the election. But I'm not sure that it was a clear cut "good decision" for Obama. This is a tough one. The Republicans are going to dog him over this decision every day for the next 9 months. This decision ensures that the election will be a referendum on Obama instead of about the Republican.
The reason we reject out-of-hand the idea of private schools funded by charitable giving is that we don't trust conservatives and we don't want African American children becoming "white" in culture. And yes, we also reject vouchers as well because they would weaken the power of teacher' unions. And while statistics may show that conservatives give much to charities I suspect that most of those charities are for spiritual transformation or helping people in the third world, not benefiting the poor in our own urban neighborhoods.
BlueDeacon is right. Being defined as the 1% is not solely about income. Jim's role as having his own blog would clearly identify him as part of the 1% and the power that we attribute to that group.
But having said that, like Blue said about the Kennedys, being part of the 1% doesn't have to be a bad thing.
"It's a Wonderful Life" is just a movie. While the theme of the movie may be that someone with friends has more wealth than someone with money, that isn't true in real life. George tells Mrs. Walsh that his children "may not be the best dressed". This is an indication of the shame that the working poor must endure because they don't possess the same things as the more affluent. We must work to ensure that the working poor doesn’t need to be embarrassed by how they dress.
It is liberal think tanks that continue to publish and push the data and AP that continues to write articles about the increasing number of poor in America. According to Rasmussen’s polling data support among liberals has been dropping for Obama ever since these articles started being published. I believe that their purpose is to drain support for Obama from his base to prepare for Hilary Clinton to step in as the nominee at the convention.

Over the past year there have been a number of AP news articles stating that poverty rates have risen sharply over the past 3 years to 50%. What troubles me is the implied implication that this sharp rise is caused by the policies of a president who has brown skin. I think we also need to keep in mind that while unemployment, food stamps and poverty rates are up the income disparity has fallen. In 2008 the top 1% of income earners were earning 17% of the income. Their portion of the total income has fallen to 11% in 2011.
Let's not measure the morality of our country solely on the poverty rate. Let's also keep in mind the disparity of income. I would be OK with 100% of society living at the poverty rate if the income gap could be narrowed to zero.

Official rhetoric has helped fuel an escalation of tension between the United States and Iran. Do recent negotiations mark a change in direction, or just a temporary detour from the highway to military attack?

For a conservative, being called racist is not nearly as bad as being called a slut or cunt.
I was surprised at how mean spirited and deamonizing the video clip was. I like it'!
Maybe the bigger problem is that Obama has not been the "jobs" president that he promised he would be.
While food stamps benefit all Americans, jobs benefit us even more.
Do you think that jobs for the Chinese are less important to God than jobs for Americans? After all, this blog is about "God's Politics".

So what is the big deal of whether Jesus was born in a house or in an inn? It doesn't change the essence of the story in any way.

Yes, under Obama the income gap has narrowed and the poverty rate has increased. It is a mixed blessing.
I knew the facts were off. It appears that the numbers were exaggerated to make the first brown American president look incompetent.

It’s all about skin color.
