Sojourners Magazine Earns Two Eddie Awards from FOLIO 2009

Leading Christian Magazine Garners Best "Religious/Spiritual” and Best “Single Article” Silver Awards

WASHINGTON, DC – December 10, 2009Sojourners magazine, a monthly publication that addresses issues of faith, politics, and culture from a biblical perspective, received two prestigious 2009 Silver Eddie Awards from industry-leader FOLIO: magazine. The Eddie Awards recognize excellence in magazine editorial and design and are presented by FOLIO, the leading publication for magazine professionals. Sojourners magazine won silver in the Consumer, Religious/Spiritual category for a full issue and silver in the “single article” for the same category. These highly esteemed awards come on the heels of earning 25 honors from the Associated Church Press and the Evangelical Press Association this past spring.

"Sojourners offers a perspective not found anywhere else,” said Jim Rice, editor of Sojourners magazine. "We strive to bring the highest quality editorial content to our readers and are committed to an intelligent, well-crafted magazine that examines cutting-edge issues from our perspective as Christians.”

The silver winners of the Eddie Awards were revealed on Dec. 1, at the annual FOLIO: Show's Eddie and Ozzie Awards digital gallery in Chicago. There were more than 2,000 entries this year, the largest competition in magazine publishing, and more than 100 expert judges evaluated the entries. The Eddie and Ozzie Awards are the only competition for all magazines for editorial and design excellence. Magazines are judged on how well they fulfill their stated mission and the quality of their content.

Sojourners earned accolades for the June 2009 “best full issue” with the cover story "Bridge Over Troubled Waters” by Sojourners associate editor Julie D. Polter on the new common-ground movement to reduce abortions. The award-winning issue also included articles by Bob Goudzwaard on the economic crisis, by Kent Annan on Native American evangelical theologians, and by Rose Marie Berger on the spirituality of Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve as Secretary of Labor. Additionally, Sojourners was noted in the “single article” category for “The Meaning of ‘Life’” by Sojourners assistant editor Jeannie Choi and Sojourners editor Jim Rice in the November 2008 issue, on the diversification of political views among young evangelical voters, especially on what it means to be “pro-life.”

"Sojourners is also expanding our editorial content on our Web site at to provide our readers with interesting and interactive content forms that bring forward the people behind the stories we cover,” said Rice.

In 2009, the FOLIO awards drew more than 2,000 entries, including Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Spirituality and Health, National Geographic, Redbook, and Mother Jones. FOLIO: magazine’s Eddie and Ozzie competition is largest award competition in magazine publishing. The Eddie awards recognize editorial excellence in a magazine and online.
