SOJOURNERS EXPANDS TALENT; HIRES THREE TOP TIER WOMEN
Washington - Sojourners announces three new top level hires. Author and activist Lisa Sharon Harper, columnist, author, blogger Cathleen Falsani, and marketing professional Syieda Penn officially joined Sojourners in response to growing national interest around biblical justice and cultural dialogue.
Lisa Sharon Harper, the new Director of Mobilizing at Sojourners, comes to Washington from New York City, where she served as the founding executive director of New York Faith & Justice. Harper is co-author of the forthcoming book, Left, Right & Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics, which was co-written with D.C. Innes, a Tea Party Republican. Her writing has been featured in The Huffington Post, The National Civic Review, Urban Faith, Prism, and Sojourners' blog God's Politics. Centering her writing on comprehensive immigration reform, poverty, racial justice, and poverty, she authored Evangelical Does Not Equal Republican…Or Democrat (2008). Lisa will mobilize local, regional, and national partners to engage people around Sojourners' campaigns and issue areas. She holds two master's degrees, the first from the University of Southern California in playwriting, the second in Human Rights from Columbia University. She earned her bachelor's degree from Rutgers University.
Cathleen Falsani will expand her role with Sojourners as the Web Editor and Director of New Media. Falsani was the award-winning religion writer for the Chicago Sun-Times from 2000-2010 and is the author of four nonfiction books, including the newly released BELIEBER: Fame, Faith, and the Heart of Justin Bieber. Her work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Christianity Today, the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and other publications in North America and Europe. She has appeared as a commentator on CNN, Oprah Winfrey's "Soul Series,” National Public Radio's Weekend Edition, FoxNewsChannel, Moody Radio, The Tavis Smiley Show, and several other radio and television venues. She holds a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College, a master's in journalism from Northwestern University, as well as a master's from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. Married to Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Maurice Possley, she will continue to live in Laguna Beach, California with their son Vasco.
Sojourners' new Chief Marketing Officer, Syieda Penn, served as head of a progressive integrated marketing and communications consulting firm that she founded in 2005, where she focused on building social marketing programs, projects, campaigns, and initiatives. Specializing in grassroots community engagement, Penn has extensive hands-on knowledge and experience in strategic communications and brand building, development and fund raising, advertising, public and media relations, project and program planning, management and implementation, social media marketing, as well as event planning and promotions. In addition, Syieda facilitated major partners and formulated advertising strategy with Rock the Vote to register thousands of young people ahead of the 2000 election. She holds a bachelor's degree from South Carolina State University in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Apart from her experience in marketing and sales, she is a United States Air Force Reservist and served as Board Chairman of PreventionWorks, an HIV/AIDS nonprofit in DC from 2009 to 2010.
