The Common Good

Root of the economic crisis

Date: November 1, 2011

On my desk is Rediscovering Values: A Guide for Economic and Moral Recovery by Jim Wallis, published by Howard Books, 2011, 263 pages, $14.99.

Founder of the Sojourners community and social activist Jim Wallis has produced a book that seeks to answer these two questions: What caused the economic recession in America, and how will it change us?

Just as he probed the intersection between religion and politics in God’s Politics, so Wallis looks at the American economy and calls not only for an economic solution but also a moral response. He declares that the answers to our current crisis “will be based on moral, spiritual and even theological arguments more than political ones. They will be based upon the understanding that there will be no real long-term economic recovery without a moral recovery.”
