Evangelicalism: Black or White?

Date: March 14, 2012

I was reading a guest commentary by Lisa Sharon Harper on the Sojourners online edition entitled “Black Evangelicals, White Evangelicals, and Franklin Graham’s Repentance.” The column caught my attention in the first paragraph when she recounted a dinner encounter when a friend asked her “Do you think Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Christian?” She was “dumbstruck” saying, “I had never had anyone actually ask that question before.” I was dumbstruck too!  It turns out that her friend wasn’t sure of Dr. King’s Christianity because it didn’t look like her friend’s expression of Christianity.
