Clergy, Religious Leaders Gather on Capitol Steps to Pray, Read Scripture Ahead of Expected Key Votes on Government Funding

Faithful Filibuster for most vulnerable Americans goes into seventh day

WASHINGTON – Ahead of expected key Congressional votes on a deal to fund the government, clergy and religious leaders will gather tomorrow on the steps of the U.S. Capitol for a sunrise service of prayer and scripture as a part of the continuing “Faithful Filibuster.”

Organizations represented in Wednesday’s sunrise service include the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sojourners and the Salvation Army. A representative from the National Association of Evangelicals is also expected to take part in the service.

The clergy and religious leaders with gather at 6:45 a.m., with the service beginning promptly at 7:00 a.m.

The “Faithful Filibuster” began last week, continuing through the rain and the weekend. The filibuster is a religious effort, organized by the Circle of Protection, to read the more than 2000 verses of Scripture in the Bible to remind Congress that their dysfunction hurts the most vulnerable Americans and that we are charged with caring for the least among us.

The event is open to media. Photo and interview opportunities with religious leaders in attendance will be available.
