Christian Leaders Encouraged By President Obama’s Commitment to Immigration Reform

Faith community will mobilize and act to make immigration

a top legislative priority this year

FOR MEDIA: Christian leaders and immigrant rights activists are available for comment.

WASHINGTON, DC – April  09, 2009 — Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, a national coalition of Christian organizations, churches, and leaders from across the theological and political spectrum united in support of comprehensive immigration reform, issued the following statement in response to signals from the White House that President Obama will push immigration reform this year:

“Christians throughout the United States are energized and encouraged by the courageous steps taken by the Obama administration to prioritize reform of our broken immigration laws. Today’s statements from the administration indicate that Obama will make good on his campaign promise by committing to reform within the first year of his term. We will continue to build momentum and support across the faith community for effective political solutions on immigration that restore the rule of law while also upholding moral and theological principles that call us to show compassion and mercy toward our undocumented brothers and sisters.

Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform is committed to fostering civil dialogue about immigration in our congregations and communities. Already this year, people of faith across the country have organized prayer vigils for immigrants, acted against racial profiling of immigrants by local law enforcement officials and are preparing to meet with members of Congress during the April recess to push for just and effective immigration legislation. Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform calls on President Obama to use his unique voice and leadership to foster a new conversation on immigration policy that reflects the best of our moral and civic values.
