Christian Churches Together: Response to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter From Birmingham Jail” on its 50th Anniversary

Earlier this week, it was my joy to gather with Christian Churches Together as three dozen denominations gave their official response to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous challenge to the Christian churches.

The event was attended by notable civil rights and other faith leaders such as Congressman John Lewis, Dorothy Cotton, Virgil Wood, Ron Sider, Jim Wallis, and Dr. Bernice King, who received the response on behalf of her father and shared inspiring and powerful words of her own.

Throughout the event, I found myself wondering what it would take for us to see such unified and effective mass action again as the world saw in the civil rights movement of the fifties and sixties.
