With Budget in Limbo, Poor Families Wait for a Compassionate Congress

Washington, D.C. -------“As the world waits for Christmas, poor families are still waiting for a compassionate Congress. And it looks like they will have to wait until next year. This morning the Senate passed a federal budget cutting health care, child support, and educational assistance to low-income families - while further lowering taxes for the wealthiest Americans and increasing the deficit for our grandchildren. To make matters worse, Vice President Cheney flew half way across the globe just so he could cast the deciding vote in a deadlocked Senate. We can do better as a nation just a few days before Christmas than to hurt poor families like this. The Administration has hammered the final nail in the coffin of compassionate conservatism with this vote. And now our political leaders will race out of town, join their families, celebrate good fortune and hope, and proclaim goodwill toward all. Merry Christmas!”
