In response to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signing Senate Bill 1070, Rev. Jim Wallis – a progressive evangelical leader, author of Rediscovering Values and president of Sojourners (the largest network of progressive Christians in the United States) – called the new law in Arizona a “social sin.” Rev. Wallis also said in a statement that the “radical new measure, which crosses many moral and legal lines, is a clear demonstration of the fundamental mistake of separating enforcement from comprehensive immigration reform.”

More than 100 of the nation’s faith leaders – ranging from individuals from the Southern Baptist Convention to the United Church of Christ – have come together to say that enough is enough and call for a commitment to better civil discourse on issues that often result in partisan divide. The covenant comes amid recent divisions during the healthcare debate, as Members of Congress have engaged in bipartisan attacks and even come under death threats. Rev. For many months, a group of the nation’s faith leaders with varied theological and political beliefs have been praying and discerning how they might contribute to a more civil and moral tone in the nation’s political discourse. Today they are releasing “A Covenant For Civility: Come Let Us Reason Together,” which calls for that better civic discourse. It comes at a time of degenerating national debate on contentious issues, with even Members of Congress voicing serious concern for their security.

A high-level delegation of national religious leaders today met with senior White House officials to push for immigration reform to be moved forward in Congress. This follows yesterday’s massive mobilization where over 100K people marched on Washington to demonstrate strong support for immigration reform. Religious organizations spanning the faith and ideological spectrum will bring thousands of people of faith from across the country to Washington, DC, this Sunday for a powerful demonstration of their unified support for just, humane immigration reform that keeps families together. The faith community will be joined by tens of thousands of people from civil rights, immigrant, family and labor groups for the March For America: Change Takes Courage and Faith on the National Mall on Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Before the march, people of faith will gather for an Interfaith Prayer Service on the Mall at 1 p.m, and on Monday, faith leaders will meet with top White House officials to discuss the urgent need for immigration reform, and hundreds of people of faith will meet with their Senators and Representatives and urge them to pass immigration reform this year.

Rev. Jim Wallis is in Davos, Switzerland this week providing leadership to the ethics and values pillar, one of six pillars, at the World Economic Forum.
According to recent survey findings released by the World Economic Forum and Georgetown University, two-thirds of the 130,000 respondents, from ten countries, including the United States, believe that the current economic crisis is also a crisis of ethics and values. In response, the World Economic Forum has placed corporate ethics and personal values as one of the six core pillars of this week’s conference.

The Eddie Awards recognize excellence in magazine editorial and design and are presented by FOLIO, the leading publication for magazine professionals. Sojourners magazine won silver in the Consumer, Religious/Spiritual category for a full issue and silver in the “single article” for the same category. These highly esteemed awards come on the heels of earning 25 honors from the Associated Church Press and the Evangelical Press Association this past spring.

The decision by President Obama to send additional troops to Afghanistan saddens me. I believe it is a mistake, it is the wrong direction for U.S. foreign policy, and it is disappointing to many of us in the faith community and our friends who spearhead the on-the-ground development efforts in Afghanistan and around the world.

Sojourners, the largest network of progressive Christians in the United States, launched a campaign this week to call for talk show hosts to tell the truth in the health care debate. Over 10,000 messages have already been sent to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.
Rev Jim Wallis: Talk show hosts like Limbaugh and Hannity are pulling the country away from the moral core of this health care debate. They are working to mobilize opposition to reform by preying on the legitimate confusions and understandable fears of their viewers as well as propagating deliberate distortions. And it’s time that someone call them to account.

“President Barack Obama made the commitments that a broad coalition in the faith community had asked for - reform as a moral issue, affordable coverage for all, and no federal funding of abortion. Now it is the job of the faith community and every concerned American to make sure the final bill reflects all these moral principles. We will now be calling on our members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, many of them members of our congregations, to support these moral commitments and to make sure, as they “iron out the details,” that each one is firmly upheld.”
