The Poverty Forum, a group of 18 politically diverse leaders with expertise in poverty initiatives and policy reform, today released a set of policy recommendations aimed at dramatically reducing domestic poverty. Co-chaired by Mike Gerson, senior fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, and Rev. Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, this policy platform represents a nonpartisan initiative where leaders from government, community, faith-based and grassroots organizations worked together to find common-ground solutions.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee today announced that Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, the largest network of progressive Christians in the United States and author of The Great Awakening, was among a diverse selection of religious leaders asked to give the responsive prayer during the National Prayer Service. The service will take place on the morning of Wednesday, January 22, 2009 at the National Cathedral and will be attended by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden, and members of their families.

The Mobilization to End Poverty will be a historic gathering. Thousands of Christians will come together in a powerful movement committed to the biblical imperative of reducing domestic and global poverty. The Mobilization will call the new President and Congress to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and cut domestic poverty in half within 10 years.

Sojourners responded to President-elect Obama’s call for a renewed national commitment to service by launching MLK Day Commit to Change, a website dedicated to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The site offers educational resources including grassroots advocacy and service opportunities for people of faith. These commitments range from personal ones on the individual level to initiatives that benefit local communities and beyond to national campaigns. Results of a new post-election poll released today provide an in-depth look at the shift in priorities and moral agenda for Catholic and evangelical voters. Sponsored by Faith in Public Life, in partnership with Sojourners and Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, and conducted by Public Religion Research, the poll’s findings indicate a new faith constituency with a broader moral agenda that will have a significant impact upon the next presidential administration and Congress.
