In the April issue of “Sojourners,” evangelical theologian Jim Wallis has written an essay called “A Gospel for the Common Good.”

Poverty and riches — evangelical leader Jim Wallis from the Sojourner community in Washington, D.C., reminds us that this theme is prominent in the Bible. In the Old Testament, it was the second most prominent topic behind idolatry. In the New Testament, one of every 16 verses is about the poor or money. And if you read from the Acts of the Apostles, you'll discover that the followers of Jesus lived communally after his death, sharing material goods; early socialists you might say!

I hope to involve local Democratic and Republican leaders in a discussion of the Rev. Jim Wallis' book, "God's Politics: A New Vision for Faith and Politics in America — Why the Right gets it Wrong and the Left doesn't get it." Wallis, the editor of Sojourners Magazine, was responsible for full-page ads in the New York Times and other newspapers during the 2004 presidential campaign, saying, "God is not a Republican or a Democrat."
