The fact that Sojourners, led by well-known progressive Jim Wallis, an adviser to President Obama, is a part of this coalition means that it is not just a stalking horse for conservative ideology.

As Jim Wallis of Sojourners puts it, "Hope is believing despite the evidence and then watching the evidence change." That means hope can never be the property of a particular political leader, party, or campaign, though candidates can certainly tap into it. Rather, it resides in the actions of ordinary citizens, including, but not limited to showing up at the polls to exert what influence they can.

The religious left, a major force in every social justice movement in US history, is acting once again. I strongly recommend a take a look at the following actions via the Sojourners website. This is faith in action on behalf of the 99%! The right has no monopoly claim on religious authority, and no claim at all on moral authority. This is a natural and necessary alliance.

Other religious leaders made similar calls, with Rev. Jim Wallis telling Republicans, “We did not get into fiscal trouble because of poor people. … The poor didn’t cause this. Let’s not make them pay for it.”

Beck's condemnations aren't going over well in some faith communities. The Rev. Jim Wallis, a prominent evangelical figure and president of the Sojourners network, argued yesterday, "I don't know if Beck is just strange, just trying to be controversial, or just trying to make money. But in any case, what he has said attacks the very heart of our Christian faith, and Christians should no longer watch his show."

Evangelical leader Jim Wallis, author of The Great Awakening and founder of Sojourners, which bills itself as the largest network of progressive Christians in the United States, today issued a statement in response to Obama's proposal on Tuesday to form a new President's Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships within the White House.

In my brand new Sojourners magazine, Jim Wallis has an editorial piece, A Generation Comes of Age, in which he suggests that young evangelicals are in fact very different than their parents. This very fact may be an indication of an important shift that liberals should pay careful attention to, and point to a new alignment and new energy for the causes of human rights and our future.

In a post on The Huffington Post entitled, "A Religious Landscape Ripe for Revival," Jim Wallis of Sojourners notes the latest Pew survey on religious life seems to indicate that non-denominational churches are growing. He observes that churches offering a personal faith--one that is not deeply doctrinal--are growing. And he believes that such churches include ones offering a "new evangelical agenda."
I received this email blast from Sojourners: It starts You have awakened the sleeping giant, too long dormant, but ever present, deep in the American democratic spirit. You have given voice and space to the unspoken feelings of countless others about something that has gone terribly wrong in our society. And you have sparked a flame from the embers of both frustration and hope that have been building, steadily, in the hearts of so many of us for quite some time. Short version is "Keep up the good work. Stay humble, it's not about you, it's about the 99%"
