Charles, the son of an American woman of Dutch heritage and a Navajo man, is deeply involved in both Native American and Christian issues – he has worked on various projects with the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, the Christian Reformed World Missions, Sojourners, Emerging Voices Project, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Campus Crusade; and he is a board member on the Christian Community Development Association and the Christian Reformed Church of North America.

Beau Underwood, the Director for Campaigns and Advocacy at Christian social justice group Sojourners, said that as the government shutdown looked imminent, many of the Circle of Protection's members began discussing how Christians ought to respond to it.

The attendants of faith leaders includes representatives from National Association of Evangelicals; Archdiocese of Seattle; Northland Church, Orlando, Fl; Korean Churches for Community Development, Los Angeles, CA; Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, Solana Beach, CA; Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Nashville, TN; National Latino Evangelical Coalition; and Sojourners.
This is the second year for the multi-ethnic church conference, and it will feature speakers Jim Wallis, John Perkins, Choco De Jesus, Soong-Chan Rah, David Anderson, Eugene Cho and Heather Larsen, among others.
These leaders, including the Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, Galen Carey, vice president for governmental affairs at National Association of Evangelicals, and Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, will be reading 2,000 Bible verses dealing with poverty at an outdoor location near the Capitol. The "faithful filibuster" is planned to last until the shutdown ends.
World Vision partnered with Micah Challenge, the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, Sojourners, the World Evangelical Alliance and Bread for the World to gather leaders from across the U.S. to not only pray that more would be done in achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals, but also advocate for ways in which churches, Christians and nonprofits can engage and get behind the U.N.-brokered initiative.
