A Few of My Favorite Things

What are my favorite things for listening to, watching, and perusing? Well...

My wife. Great body, great soul, great spirit...Brenda, of 21 years. Because she still has that rich warm voice of wisdom and grace that made me fall in love with her on the first date. What a sacrament!

Watching and listening to my two sons, ages 19 and 15. They don't stay little very long, and since we've always taught them that they should be about nurturing and exercising their gifts in God's kingdom NOW (and not sit on the sidelines and watch how Mom and Dad "do it" for 20 years 'til they tire of ever finding their own place in the kingdom), it's always exciting to see what's coming down next!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Very nice film...a sort of "I'm dysfunctional, you're dysfunctional, and we're all very loved" type of thing...loved it!

New demos I'm working on...this will be record number 15 for me. We've always been a college/indie thing; very low-to-the-ground. Touring in the U.K. for the past four years has reawakened my love for Brit-pop—very melody driven, as was a lot of the early Athens, Georgia, stuff, where Vigilantes of Love is from. It's nice to still feel like music has the power to put a smile on your face and joy in your heart.

Music...haven't heard a great album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco, and that's getting on two years old now. All the so-called "sensitive singer-songwriter stuff" is kinda boring. It was cool for 15 minutes, then everyone started writing everybody else's songs with all the same string band instrumentations. Call me a holdout from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? club. I thought Black Rebel Motorcycle Club [by the band of the same name] was rockin'...very doom-y but passionate...reminded me of early Joy Division.
