Friends of Sabeel, North America

Much of the world sees the peace process in Palestine and Israel as taking place between Muslims and Jews, forgetting that there are many Palestinian Christians who are also affected by the expansion of settlements, travel restrictions, and other compulsions put on the Arab population by the Israeli government.

Sabeel Liberation Theology Center is an ecumenical group in Jerusalem that seeks to make the gospel contextually relevant in the lives of Palestinian Christians. The work of Sabeel, which means "the way" or "spring of water" in Arabic, is to nurture the development of a biblically based theology that springs directly from the land and experience of the people of Palestine.

A new support chapter, Friends of Sabeel-North America has been formed to help sustain the work of Sabeel in Jerusalem and to educate North American Christians about the challenges facing Palestinians in the occupied areas. This grassroots, ecumenical effort hopes to get Christians in the United States and Canada involved in the work for a just and comprehensive peace in Palestine. Friends of Sabeel-North America is planning a conference on "the significance of Jerusalem," to be in held in Washington, D.C., June 4-6, 1997. For more information, contact Friends of Sabeel-North America, Box 4214, Ann Arbor, MI 48106-4214.
