Young, Catholic, and Feminist?

According to a 1992 Gallup poll, 67 percent of all Catholics and 80 percent of Catholics under the age of 35 support the ordination of women. Yet in forming the Common Ground Project last year, even the respected Cardinal Joseph Bernardin was sharply criticized for calling for dialogue on difficult issues facing the Catholic Church, including the role of women in the church.

The Women's Ordination Conference (WOC) is introducing the Young Feminist Network (YFN) to provide an outreach, support, and advocacy network for women and men under the age of 30. It is intended for those who want to work for the equal rights of women in the Catholic Church and for mutually respectful and liberating relationships between men and women in all aspects of church life and society. The YFN hopes to be a forum for discussion, reflection, and action where people can create real dialogue on topics that may make being young and Catholic complicated (see "Grappling With the Tough Questions," by Kimberly Burge, page 10).

To join YFN, or to receive information or assistance with organizing a local network, contact YFN c/o WOC, P.O. Box 2693, Fairfax, VA 22031-0693; (703) 352-1006, ext. 22; e-mail: WOC96@aol.com
