- Photojournalist Mev Puleo, whose work focused on the lives and struggles of the poor, died January 12, 1996, of a brain tumor. Puleo, who was 32 years old, received the 1995 U.S. Catholic Award for furthering the cause of women in the Catholic Church. She was a frequent contributor to Sojourners. Her most recent book, The Struggle Is One: Voices and Visions of Liberation , focuses on the Catholic church in Brazil (see "Culture Watch," January-February 1996).
- Starbucks Coffee Company has adopted a worldwide code of conduct, thanks to efforts by the U.S.-Guatemala Labor Education Project. Starbucks will push other coffee companies to follow suit. - Shortly after pulling out of the Mandarin International factory in El Salvador this fall (see "Between the Lines," January-February 1996), The Gap returned, this time with a new code of conduct, and is inviting an independent human rights group to monitor conditions.
