On this date 50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy was assasinated while in Dallas on a campaign tour. As the nation remembers this event, we reflect on President Kennedy's life and death.

From the AP today, a reflection both on their own coverage of the event and on the ways that people around the country are remembering this sad day in history:

"Perhaps the most famous grave in the United States is Kennedy's, marked by an eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington. Initially a propane-fed torch provided by the Washington Gas Company, it was lit by Jacqueline Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy during JFK's funeral on Nov. 25, 1963."

As for video news coverage, Walter Cronkite, visibly emotional, announced the president's death on a CBS News bulletin.
