Executive Assistant

Sojourners seeks an Executive Assistant with a heart for social justice and a vocational calling to provide excellent executive-level scheduling and events management support to Sojourners’ President, Jim Wallis.

FUNCTION:

The Executive Assistant coordinates the schedule and activities of the President’s office and manages the President’s speaking events.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Manage all aspects of the President’s full and complex schedule, providing context as needed to assist in discerning priorities among the many opportunities received.

* Ensure the President receives briefing materials for external and internal meetings as needed.

* Represent the President in making initial contacts, responding to invitations, and arranging meetings as requested; provide appropriate follow-up to meetings involving the President.

* Screen telephone calls, correspondence, and emails to the President; assist with the preparation of letters and other communications from the President.

* Manage response to incoming speaking event inquiries, including developing opportunities as appropriate with hosts, negotiating details of speaking contracts, managing logistics and choreography of scheduled events, creating/editing Sojourners’ event publicity, convening meetings as required to review pending requests and assisting with decision-making on speaking invitations.

* Coordinate and integrate opportunities at speaking events with Advocacy, Mobilizing, Communications, and Advancement Teams to maximize opportunities.

* Invoice event hosts for event-related expenses and keep track of event receivables, including honoraria; complete expense forms related to the company credit cards that belong to the President.

* Book all travel arrangements for President and his traveling staff.

* Assist Research Assistant to the President with preparation of briefing materials for President prior to scheduled events.

* Supervise the Executive Assistant intern.

* Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years’ experience in a similar administrative position.

* Executive-level scheduling experience for a public figure, including speaking events development and management.

* Exceptional interpersonal skills and attention to detail; excellent writing and communication skills.

* Ability to exercise mature judgment, discernment, and confidentiality as required, and to respond to a fast-paced, constantly changing work environment.

* Vocational interest in an executive support position; commitment to the mission and vision of Sojourners and an understanding of its place in the progressive Christian church world.

Associate Editor

Supervisor: Sojourners magazine Editor

Sojourners has an immediate opening for an experienced and well-rounded Associate Editor in its Washington, D.C. office. This member of our faith- and justice-oriented editorial team will have responsibility for editing and developing materials for Sojourners magazine, including soliciting articles, working with authors, copy editing, and proofreading, as well as other editorial duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Editing and proofing
    Copy edit and proofread material for Sojourners magazine, using Sojourners and AP style.
     
  2. General editorial responsibilities
    Contribute to editorial visioning and planning, including for Sojourners magazine, as a full member of the editorial staff, through editorial meetings, and at staff retreats; and engage in general editorial responsibilities including soliciting articles, working with authors, supervising editorial interns, etc.
     
  3. Enhancing and expanding the magazine’s online presence and outreach
    Work to increase Sojourners magazine’s online presence and outreach and maximize cross-promotion between our online presence and our magazine content.
     
  4. Other editing work
    Editing and proofing work from other Sojourners departments, helping to develop, edit, and proof resource and curricular materials, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Four to six years of editorial experience, preferably in magazine format, including copy writing, editing, and proofreading; proficiency with AP Style.

* Experience in nonprofit journalism preferred.

* Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or communications preferred.

* Comfortable working independently as well as creatively with the editorial staff.

* Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills; intensive copyediting experience.

* Experience in cross-platform content creation preferred.

* Strong organizational skills for managing several projects at once.

* Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; proficiency with editing in Drupal 6 and Convio a plus.

* Experience with social media, video production, and audio editing preferred.

* Web content management skills a plus.

* Awareness of issues affecting underrepresented communities a plus.

* Desire to work on a team of highly committed Christians who are dedicated to the highest quality advocacy journalism and crafting with excellence the stories of people of faith acting for justice in our world today.

* Knowledge and understanding of Sojourners' perspective and place in the religious landscape and progressive faith community.
