Director of Audience Engagement

Supervisor: Web Editor and Chief Digital Officer

Sojourners has an immediate opening for an enthusiastic and experienced individual to serve as Director of Audience Engagement to guide the growth of Sojourners with an emphasis on content promotion and communication with our audience. This position works directly with the Magazine Editor, Director of Advocacy and Communications, and Chief Advancement Officer to ensure messaging coordination over Sojourners’ platforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement, with the Web and Magazine Editors, marketing and communications strategies for content promotion and growth of Sojourners’ platforms, including print and online publications.
  • Oversee the growth of and communications with Sojourners’ email audience.
  • Oversee trends and analytics to implement best practices for audience engagement and growth.
  • Manage audience response to Sojourners’ communications and publications.
  • Work with Senior Director of Circulation to grow revenue and readership of Sojourners magazine.
  • Work with the Online Organizing Associate to develop and implement online/e-mail campaigns based on the organization’s issue priorities to grow and deepen the engagement of the Sojourners online community.
  • Convene a cross-departmental team with the primary goals of growing Sojourners’ online audience and online fundraising.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum three years’ experience in marketing and communications, especially content promotion, message development, audience and readership growth and analysis, and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of building online and print audiences and communities.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and editing, and speaking comfort and experience.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to handle several assignments simultaneously, attention to detail; ability to multitask and prioritize. Excellent interpersonal skills essential.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Sojourners’ faith-based mission.
  • Ideal candidate will have background in creative design and direction.

Web and Multimedia Associate

Department: 
Web Team

Supervisor: Web Editor and Chief Digital Officer

Job Function: The Web and Multimedia Associate works with the Web Team to provide multimedia content and technical assistance for the Sojourners flagship platform sojo.net.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Work under the Web Team, and interdepartmentally, to shoot/record, edit, and post photo, audio, and video content for blog coverage and other Sojourners projects.
  • Create graphic Web and social media elements such as online ads, website banners, memes, online marketing collateral, etc.
  • Create design mockups for Web pages and ancillary websites as needed.
  • Work with the Director of Web and Digital Technology to handle website updates and Web support for Sojourners constituents.
  • Provide additional Web Team news and culture coverage support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a communications field and at least one year experience in multimedia communications.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud products (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro); working knowledge of entire suite a plus.
  • Photographic and video proficiency (using Canon and/or Nikon SLR cameras).
  • Experience with video production (staging, lighting, etc.).
  • Experience with audio production (set up for radio, podcasts, etc.).
  • Knowledge of AP Style.
  • Writing clips that include culture, political, religion, etc., coverage.
  • Proficiency in basic coding: HTML/CSS.
  • Experience designing for the Web and social media.
  • Familiarity with Drupal content management system a plus.
  • Familiarity with Convio database software a plus.
  • Customer service interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn on the job and turn around projects on a quick timeline to work with the news cycle.

Press Secretary

Supervisor: Director of Advocacy and Communications

Sojourners has an immediate opening for an energetic and experienced Press Secretary to join our Washington, D.C. staff. The Press Secretary handles media requests and pitches for Jim Wallis and other Sojourners spokespersons, helping to elevate Sojourners’ voice in national, political, and religious media.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Media Relations for Sojourners’ President, Jim Wallis, and Sojourners

  • Leverage the President’s voice through pitching and media booking.
  • Identify and cultivate new opportunities to leverage and amplify the work of Jim Wallis and Sojourners in the media.
  • Handle media inquiries, schedule interviews in consultation with the Executive Assistant to the President, and prepare briefing documents to assist organizational spokespersons.
  • Build relationships with reporters interested in the unique perspective and work of Sojourners and organizational spokespersons; provide background interviews for reporters and on-the-record responsibilities, as needed.
  • Lead the monitoring of news coverage around Sojourners’ priority issues and coverage of the organization; identify opportunities to comment on stories of interest.
  • Write and distribute media advisories, press releases, and press kits.
  • Manage media-related projects, including press conferences, events, and projects as assigned.
  • Manage the Communications Assistant (intern) on interview logistics, briefings, interview preparation, and substantial media training.
  • Assist the President and Director of Advocacy and Communications in developing and implementing communications strategy and talking points.

Managing the President’s Public Voice

  • Assist the President with writing and editing of op-eds, columns, statements, articles, books, and social media.
  • Draft briefing materials and talking points for President and other organizational spokespeople.
  • Staff the President and other organizational spokespeople at press events, interviews, and any other opportunities.
  • Provide editorial and message feedback on books, podcasts, and other large communications projects as needed.

Providing Communications Support to Partners/Coalitions

  • Liaise with outside partners in nationwide campaign efforts.
  • Provide pitching, media booking, and writing capacity for coalitions and key partners working with organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience in communications work, including pitching, media relations and follow-up, and media and messaging strategy.
  2. Experience with strategic planning, coalition work, budgeting, program evaluation, and supervision.
  3. Knowledge of the media and political world, as well as the church and religious world.
  4. Knowledge of social, racial, and economic justice issues and the biblical and theological foundations and frameworks for addressing them.
  5. Excellent communication skills, including writing and editing, and speaking comfort and experience.
  6. Exceptional organizational skills to handle several assignments simultaneously, attention to detail, ability to multitask and prioritize; excellent interpersonal skills essential.

Donor Services Associate and Database Administrator

Supervisor: Director of Individual Giving

Sojourners has an immediate need for a Donor Services Associate and Database Administrator to fill the needs of the Sojourners Advancement Team. This position will work directly with the Director of Individual Giving to maintain our donor database and enter all incoming gifts.

Job Function: The Donor Services Associate and Database Administrator has primary responsibility for managing gifts to Sojourners, including sending acknowledgment letters, troubleshooting donor questions, and maintaining and reporting current data. This position also provides departmental support for state registration renewals, workplace giving applications, meetings, and special projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Data entry of donations received via mail, online, and other sources.
  • Prepare and send acknowledgments and correspondence to donors.
  • Assist the Director of Individual Giving and the Chief Advancement Officer with ongoing analysis of donor giving trends as requested.
  • Weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly uploads of gift data from external sources into development database.
  • Manage organization’s registration renewal applications for charitable organization status in various states.
  • With Chief Advancement Officer’s guidance, prepare team meeting agendas.
  • Manage workplace giving program through HCROA application process and the Combined Federal Campaign.
  • Respond to and troubleshoot donor correspondence for non-monthly donors.
  • Update monthly timesheet data for CFO and Director of Foundation Relations.
  • Assist with reporting and data collection for the annual audit.
  • Provide accountant with budget code breakdowns for development revenue on an ongoing basis.
  • Serve as the Advancement Team’s database administrator; manage the team’s database management needs, including communication with tech support staff.
  • Merge duplicates in Raiser’s Edge on a monthly basis.
  • Process donations and constituent information in Raiser’s Edge through the Luminate Online plug-in.
  • Oversee production of year-end giving statements to donors.
  • Provide special project support for the Chief Advancement Officer, the Senior Director of Foundation Relations, and Director of Major Gifts as appropriate at supervisor’s request.
  • Assist Director of Major Gifts, Senior Director of Foundation Relations, and Chief Advancement Officer with maintenance of media tab on donor records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 1-2 years of development experience in a non-profit setting, and 1+ years of database experience.
  • Comfort with querying, exporting, and manipulating large data sets in a database; strong preference given to candidates with Raisers Edge and Convio/Luminate Online experience.
  • Proficiency in basic PC programs (Word, Excel, etc.), strongly detail-oriented, and committed to seeing nuanced projects through to completion.
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of Sojourners and an understanding of its place in the progressive Christian church world; vocational interest in a fundraising support position a plus.
